NFL Exec: Giants 'Ain't Taking' Shedeur Sanders After Wilson, Winston Contracts

Julia StumbaughMar 26, 2025

At least one NFL executive believes the New York Giants acquiring Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston indicates the franchise won't target Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL draft.

"Odd couple, and it would tell you they ain't taking Sanders," an AFC executive told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler about the Wilson and Winston signings.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported Friday that the Giants had inked Winston to a two-year, $8 million deal.

Four days later, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the Giants had reached a one-year agreement with Wilson, worth up to $21 million with $10.5 million guaranteed.

The Giants currently hold the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft. Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein recently reported she believes the Wilson signing means New York does not believe Sanders will be available past the top two selections.

The dual signings cap off the Giants' monthslong efforts to add a veteran quarterback, which reportedly included making offers to both Matthew Stafford and Aaron Rodgers.

Stafford has since re-signed with the Los Angeles Rams. ESPN's Brooke Pryor recently reported Rodgers, who has also reportedly received interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, has an "indefinite deadline" as to when he will make his decision regarding the 2025 season.

By pivoting to add both Wilson and Winston instead, the Giants have acquired another option in case the franchise decides to make a midseason quarterback change for a second straight campaign.

The signings also give the Giants the opportunity to target a different position with the No. 3 selection. If the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns add quarterbacks with the top two picks, Schoen could get the chance to select one of the top two prospects on the latest B/R 2025 NFL Draft Big Board by drafting cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter or edge rusher Abdul Carter.
