Jakob Chychrun, Capitals Agree to $72M Contract Extension Ahead of 2025 NHL Playoffs

Mike ChiariMar 25, 2025

The Washington Capitals announced Tuesday that they signed defenseman Jakob Chychrun to an eight-year, $72 million contract extension.

Chychrun had been set to hit free agency this coming offseason, but he will instead remain in Washington on a deal that pays him an average annual salary of $9 million.

The 26-year-old Chychrun has played a big role in the Caps' success this season, as they have the best record in the NHL with 102 points through 70 games.

Capitals general manager Chris Patrick commented on the move on the team's official website, saying:

"Jakob is a proven, dynamic defenseman in the prime of his career who has established himself as one of the premier blueliners in the NHL. His work ethic, skill set, and ability to excel in all situations at both ends of the ice make him a valuable asset to our team. He is a perfect fit with our culture and vision for the future, and we couldn't be more thrilled that he will continue to be part of our organization for the next eight years."

Originally the No. 16 overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft by the Arizona Coyotes, Chychrun was traded to the Ottawa Senators in 2023.

After playing just one full season and part of another in Ottawa, the Sens traded him to Washington back in July for defenseman Nick Jensen and a 2026 third-round pick.

That move has paid massive dividends for the Caps, as Chychrun has enjoyed a career year in 2024-25.

Over 65 games, Chychrun has matched his career high with 18 goals to go along with 25 assists for a career-high 43 points.

Chychrun also has a career-best rating of plus-24, as well as 79 blocked shots and 47 hits, while averaging just shy of 21 minutes of time on ice per game.

This season, Chychrun leads all Capitals defensemen in goals and is second to John Carlson in points and average time on ice.

Since winning their first Stanley Cup in 2018, the Caps have reached the playoffs in five of six seasons, but each of those postseason trips ended with a first-round elimination.

As a result, expectations weren't particularly high for the Capitals entering this season, but they are trending toward their best record since posting 118 points in 2016-17.

Much of the focus has been on future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin and his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's career goal-scoring record, but the Capitals have gotten major contributions throughout the lineup.

Chychrun is a major part of that, and by signing him to a new deal, Washington has its cornerstone defenseman locked up for many years to come.
