NFL Rumors: Patriots Grade Travis Hunter as Best CB and WR Prospect in 2025 Draft

Joseph ZuckerMar 17, 2025

The New England Patriots have Colorado's Travis Hunter as their top-ranked prospect at both cornerback and wide receiver, according to Karen Guregian of MassLive.

Guregian wrote how Christian Gonzalez's improvement in 2024 and the signing of Carlton Davis may not preclude the Patriots from taking Hunter, whom many consider to operate best at cornerback.

If New England did use the No. 4 overall pick on the Heisman Trophy winner, then it's safe to assume receiver would be his primary position from the outset.

Hunter wouldn't unseat Gonzalez, who had 59 tackles, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups in 2024. The Patriots aren't paying Davis an average of $18 million to be a backup, either.

Wideout remains a position of need for the team with many of the biggest free agents off the board.

The Pats have gone five years without a player eclipsing 1,000 receiving yards, and neither DeMario Douglas nor Kayshon Boutte has looked like a potential WR1 in the making.

That would help to justify such a big investment in Hunter, who caught 153 passes for 1,979 yards and 20 touchdowns in his two years with the Buffs, after putting a lot of resources in the cornerback position.

New England's high opinion of the two-way standout would also point to why he'd be the choice over Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan.

McMillan is the top-ranked receiver on Bleacher Report's 2025 big board and owns a sizable lead on the next best pass-catchers. He's the No. 6 prospect overall, while Texas' Matthew Golden, Ole Miss' Tre Harris, Ohio State's Emeka Egbuka and Missouri's Luther Burden III all fall in the 20s.
