The 35-year-old's victory brought his 2025 earnings to just over $8.7 million and his total career earnings to $181.2 million, via Spotrac.
McIlroy and Spaun were tied atop the leaderboard on Sunday at 12-under par, setting up the first playoff in the Players Championship since 2015.
McIlroy secured his spot in the playoff by narrowly making a par putt from four feet away from the hole on Sunday. Spaun had a chance to win the event with a 30-foot birdie putt, but the ball stopped just short.
A lengthy rain delay forced the two players to wrap up the competition on Monday.
McIlroy set up his early playoff lead with a strong drive on hole No. 16 before recording a birdie.
Spaun's triple bogey on No. 17 occurred after his tee shot sailed into the water.
Even though McIlroy closed out the playoff with a pair of bogeys, he was still able to clinch his 28th career title on the PGA Tour.
The No. 2 player in the World Golf Ranking was pleased with his overall performance.
"Unbelievably proud and happy to win my second Players Championship," McIlroy said in an interview with Golf Channel (0:36 mark). "I think this is the third time I've won on St. Patrick's Day, so it's been a good luck charm for me."
As McIlroy looks to complete a career Grand Slam at The Masters, he picked up his second PGA Tour win of the 2025 season on Monday.
