
Rory McIlroy, J.J. Spaun to Compete in Playoff at 2025 Players Championship on Monday
Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun will play in a three-hole aggregate playoff on Monday at 9 a.m. ET for the 2025 The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
Both players were tied at -12 after the final round on Sunday. McIlroy finished with a 68, while Spaun shot a 72 in the final round.
McIlroy completed the 18th hole with a par, ahead of Spaun, as he anxiously waited to see if he would leave The Players Championship as the winner. Spaun had a long putt for birdie to claim the title but left it short, prompting the playoff on Monday morning.

McIlroy kicked off the final round with a birdie-eagle on the first two holes. He followed with back-to-back birdies on holes 11 and 12 to take the lead outright, before bogeying hole 14 and finishing the round with pars.
Spaun struggled on the front nine, bogeying holes five and eight before finding his first birdie of the round on hole nine. He bogeyed hole 11 on the back nine and entered the final five holes at +2, but nailed birdies on holes 14 and 16 to catch up to McIlroy.
Notably, two-time reigning The Players Championship winner Scottie Scheffler finished -4 after shooting a 73 in the final round and finishing hole 18 with a bogey.
The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland sits seventh in the FedEx Cup rankings, with 836 total points, 357 points behind the leader. Spaun ranks 15th, 641 points behind the leader. With The Players Championship win, the winner will earn 750 points.
McIlroy will look to pick up his second The Players Championship on Monday after winning his first in 2019, while Spaun will aim for his second-ever PGA Tour win and his first at The Players Championship.
