Report: Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. Rematch Fight Could Be Held as Soon as June 21
Following their fight earlier this month that ended in a controversial majority draw, Gervonta "Tank" Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. could have their rematch sooner than expected.
In a follow-up to a report by ESPN's Mike Coppinger that said Davis and Roach "are on course for a summer rematch," Sports Illustrated's Chris Mannix noted that the bout "could happen as early as June 21st in Las Vegas."
Davis created controversy in the ninth round of his March 1 fight against Roach when he took a knee after getting hit with a jab. The referee inexplicably chose not to rule it as a knockdown, which would've given Roach a victory on the scorecards. Davis was able to retain his WBA lightweight title when two judges scored the fight 114-114 and the third scored it 115-113 in his favor.

Following an appeal by Roach's team, the New York State Athletic Commission upheld the result of the fight and said Roach's protest was denied because "the bout continued for more than three full rounds after the referee's no knockdown call, and because the boxers necessarily adjusted to the referee's ruling, the referee's call was not outcome-determinative." The commission confirmed that "the most appropriate call … would have been for the referee to determine that Mr. Davis' knee contacting the canvas constituted a knockdown."
Davis is one of the biggest stars in boxing, known for his impressive punching power and his highlight-reel knockouts. However, Roach didn't show any intimidation as he put on a more competitive performance than anyone expected, creating immense intrigue in a potential rematch.
It appears that fans won't have to wait too long to see Davis and Roach run it back, as all signs point to them meeting this summer.
