NFL Insider: 'Appears' Giants Won't Trade for No. 1 Pick amid Titans, Cam Ward Rumors

Andrew PetersMar 16, 2025

The New York Giants reported plans to trade up to get the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft could be over.

On his podcast, Breaking Big Blue with Jordan Ranaan, ESPN's Jordan Ranaan reported that New York landing the No. 1 pick "appears dead."

"Plan A was to get Matthew Stafford this offseason," Ranaan said. "Plan B appears to be try to get the No. 1 overall pick, that appears dead too."

RaananĀ reported earlier this month that the Giants were eyeing a trade with the Tennessee Titans that would give them the No. 1 pick, which they would use to selectĀ Miami'sĀ Cam Ward.

It's unclear why their plans for a trade have fizzled out in recent weeks, but it seems the Giants might have to settle with the No. 3 pick for now. Even if it can't move up to No. 1, New York should have a decent option available at No. 3.

The Titans will presumably take either Ward orĀ Shedeur SandersĀ at No. 1, but whoever isn't taken first might fall to No. 3. Of course, that depends on the Cleveland Browns' draft plans at No. 2.

If they can't find a quarterback through the draft, the Giants won't have too many options in free agency. As Raanan mentioned, New York wanted to bring in Matthew Stafford, but he'sĀ staying with the Los Angeles Rams. The top quarterback on the free agent market, Sam Darnold,Ā joinedĀ the Seattle Seahawks.

That leaves Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson as the two most likely options at this point.

Rodgers reportedly might retire before he signs with the Giants, though. Per The Athletic'sĀ Michael Silver, Dianna Russini and Alec Lewis, the veteran's preference is the Minnesota Vikings, and if he doesn't land a deal with them he might hang up his cleats.

Wilson, who visited the Giants this week, isĀ reportedlyĀ "ready to sign" with either New York or the Pittsburgh Steelers, but both teams are awaiting a decision from Rodgers.
