Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract with New York in free agency and is projected to enter the 2025 season atop the team's depth chart at quarterback. His contract also included $30 million guaranteed, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft opened his career with the Chicago Bears before spending one season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024.

Fields' jersey number with the Jets is new for him, as he wore No. 1 in Chicago and No. 2 in Pittsburgh. He also wore No. 1 during his college days at Georgia and Ohio State.

Pass-rusher Haason Reddick previously wore the No. 7 jersey with the Jets in 2024 before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency.

As for Fields, he started the first six games of the 2024 season for the Steelers as Russell Wilson dealt with a calf injury and ended up making 10 total appearances with the team.

Fields completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns compared to just one interception, finishing with a record of 4-2 as a starter. He also rushed for 289 yards and five more scores.

As Fields attempts to help the Jets bounce back from a disappointing 5-12 record in 2024, he unveiled his new uniform number on Friday.
