Report: Miles Sanders, Cowboys Agree to Contract After RB Was Released by Panthers

The Dallas Cowboys are adding some more depth to the backfield after signing Javonte Williams earlier this week.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Carolina Panthers free agent running back Miles Sanders is planning to sign with Dallas. Sanders will join the Cowboys on a one-year deal after being released by Carolina.

Sanders, a second-round pick out of Penn State in 2019, spent the first four years of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. After a career year in 2022 that saw him rack up 1,269 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, he joined the Panthers ahead of the 2023 season.

In Carolina, Sanders saw his production decrease significantly while playing alongside Chuba Hubbard in the backfield. In 2023, he had just 432 rushing yards and a touchdown along with 154 yards through the air despite playing 16 games.

Last season, Sanders had a career-low 205 rushing yards and two touchdowns with 148 yards and a touchdown through the air. He missed six games due to an ankle injury.

The Panthers opted to release Sanders this offseason as he was set to count for $8.175 million against the cap. The move saved Carolina $5.225 million.

After releasing Sanders, the Panthers picked up running back Rico Dowdle, who had a career year with the Cowboys in 2024.

Dallas backfield struggled last year despite a good year from Dowdle, averaging just 100.3 rushing yards per game, the sixth-lowest mark in the league. The Cowboys have added now added two free agents in Sanders and Williams, but whether that will be enough to give them a reliable rush attack remains to be seen.
