DK Metcalf Addresses Steelers' QB Uncertainty After Contract amid Aaron Rodgers Rumors

Julia StumbaughMar 13, 2025

DK Metcalf says he isn't concerned by the Pittsburgh Steelers having not yet committed to a starting quarterback for 2025.

The newly-acquired Steelers wide receiver said Thursday that owner Art Rooney II, general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin have made him "feel like they had the right decision with who was going to be throwing me the football," per ESPN's Brooke Pryor.

The Steelers announced Thursday the acquisition of Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Metcalf agreed to a five-year, $150 million extension in Pittsburgh following the trade.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported at the time Metcalf signed with the Steelers because he wanted "a fresh start, a new contract and — most important — a chance to win."

Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson are the only quarterbacks currently under contract in Pittsburgh. The Steelers have also reportedly made an offer to Aaron Rodgers, per Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The New York Giants are also waiting to hear back from Rodgers, per The Athletic's Dan Duggan.

The Minnesota Vikings have meanwhile "been entertaining the possibility internally" of pursuing Rodgers, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

Rodgers, who was officially released by the New York Jets on Wednesday night as a post-June 1 designation, could also decide to retire ahead of his age-42 season.

After returning from the ruptured Achilles tendon that derailed his 2023 season, Rodgers led the Jets to a 5-12 record last season while throwing for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He finished the 2024 campaign ranked 25th in the league with a QBR of 48.0, per ESPN.

The Steelers could hope a change of scenery, and the chance to work with two top receivers in Metcalf and George Pickens, could help Rodgers' accuracy bounce back in 2025.

Although Dulac reported in February that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith clashed with Russell Wilson last season over audibles, NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe recently said the Steelers believe Rodgers is a "good fit" for Smith's offensive scheme.

With Justin Fields having left to join the New York Jets, the franchise could ultimately consider turning back to Wilson. For now, the Steelers may be waiting for a decision from Rodgers before deciding on who to pair with Metcalf during the wideout's first season in Pittsburgh.
