NFL Rumors: Mac Jones' 49ers Contract 'Does Not Bear' on Brock Purdy Extension Talks
The San Francisco 49ers brought in a backup quarterback this week by signing Mac Jones to a two-year deal, but the team is reportedly still focused on getting starting quarterback Brock Purdy an extension.
"This does not bear, from my understanding, on the Brock Purdy negotiations," NFL Network's Tim Pelissero said on The Dan Patrick Show (14:00 mark). "They still want to get him locked up for the long haul."

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap 🐸

Jaguars' Hypothetical Alvin Kamara Trade Offer
Purdy, a seventh-round pick in 2022, has a year left on his rookie contract and will make a base salary of $5.346 million in 2025. He will be a free agent in 2026 if he and the Niners don't work out an extension before next offseason.
Purdy, who had a phenomenal 2023 season with 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns, took a step back in 2024, throwing for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns. Even though his numbers weren't as good in his third NFL campaign, he's still well worth an extension based on what he's done early in his career.
Purdy has an excuse for his decreased production last season as he was without key players like Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey throughout the year. With the right talent around him, Purdy should return to the best version of himself in 2025.
While it's unclear how close Purdy and the 49ers are to reaching an extension, they've at least begun the process. General manager John Lynch confirmed at the NFL Scouting Combine last month that they had started negotiations.
With Purdy likely on his way to a long-term deal, San Francisco will hope to get a solid backup out of Jones.
The former first-round draft pick out of Alabama was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars from the New England Patriots ahead of last season and ended up getting valuable reps with Trevor Lawrence dealing with injuries. Jones finished the 2024 season with 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in 10 games.
The 49ers will hope Purdy will be healthy for most of the year, but if something happens to their starter, they'll have Jones ready in waiting.
