NFL Insider: Giants Will Pick Shedeur Sanders at 3 If They Don't Get Rodgers or Wilson
Shedeur Sanders might want to keep an eye on NFL free agency during the next couple of days because he reportedly will be heading to the Big Apple if the New York Giants don't add Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson.
"The New York Giants at No. 3, with a head coach and a GM that are on the hot seat going into this year, are not going to bypass Shedeur Sanders at third overall if he is there and they do not already have a veteran option at the level of Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers," ESPN's Field Yates said Thursday (20-minute mark).
Yates mentioning head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen is notable, as both are likely on the hot seat for the 2025 campaign.
After all, team president John Mara told reporters in January that the team's turnaround "better not take too long because I've just about run out of patience."
Frankly, there aren't many better ways for a coach and G.M. to extend their shelf life with a struggling team than drafting a rookie quarterback with an early selection. That creates something of a window where rookie growing pains are to be expected before the quarterback and team make expected jumps in the second year and beyond.
If Sanders showed promise even as the Giants struggled from a record perspective in 2025, Daboll and Schoen could point to the quarterback's bright future as a way to maintain continuity.
However, New York adding Rodgers or Wilson could have quite an impact on Sanders' draft outlook. If the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns took Abdul Carter and Cam Ward with the top-two picks, the Colorado product's landing spot wouldn't be clear if the Giants had one of the notable veterans.
The New England Patriots (Drake Maye), Jacksonville Jaguars (Trevor Lawrence), Las Vegas Raiders (Geno Smith), New York Jets (Justin Fields) and Carolina Panthers (Bryce Young) all seem set at quarterback in the rest of the top eight, so Sanders could end up falling.
It may all depend on the Giants' moves in the coming days.
