Jonathan Quick, Rangers Agree to 1-Year Contract Extension Worth Reported $1.55M
Jonathan Quick is set to back up Igor Shesterkin for at least one more season.
The New York Rangers have agreed to a one-year extension to retain Quick through the 2025-26 season, the team announced Wednesday.
The deal is worth $1.55 million, per TSN's Frank Seravalli.
Quick turned 39 in January. He has recorded a .896 save percentage and 3.14 goals against average through 21 appearances in his second season as Shesterkin's backup.
The Blueshirts are one of five NHL teams allowing opponents to average more than 30 shots on goal per game this season. Quick has been solid despite those struggles, posting a 9-6-2 record and three shutouts.
The Rangers have already locked in Shesterkin by making him the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history with an eight-year, $92 million extension in December.
Quick joined the Rangers on a one-year deal ahead of the 2023-24 season, and has since signed two more deals with the team.
If he is able to remain a reliable backup option through his age-40 season, he can help the Rangers avoid overworking Shesterkin as the franchise looks to build a contender around their star netminder going forward.
Quick won two Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe Trophy with the Los Angeles Kings between 2012 and 2014.
He spent 15 and a half seasons with the Kings before he was traded in March 2023. The netminder was then part of the Vegas Golden Knights' 2023 Stanley Cup run before joining the Rangers.
New York sits out of the playoff bubble looking in at the time of Quick's extension, although the team remains just two points back of the Columbus Blue Jackets for a Wild Card spot.
The Rangers will hope their goaltending depth can help bolster a postseason run if the franchise is able to beat out the Blue Jackets while holding off the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens in the race for the final playoff spot in the East.
