Report: Tyrann Mathieu, Saints Agree to Restructured Contract for 2025 NFL Season

Scott PolacekMar 11, 2025

Defensive back Tyrann Mathieu will reportedly once again be suiting up for the New Orleans Saints during the upcoming season.

Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reported Tuesday that Mathieu and the Saints agreed to restructure his contract in order to keep him with the NFC South team for the 2025 campaign.

The LSU product's future with the team seemed up in the air when Tony Pauline of Sportskeeda reported on March 2 that New Orleans was "considering releasing" the veteran with just one year remaining on his contract.

According to Over The Cap, Mathieu was slated to make $6.3 million in base salary with an $11.3 million cap number for the 2025 season before potentially hitting free agency ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Over The Cap also listed the Saints at just 24th in the league for cap space in 2025, so it comes as no surprise they are looking to make moves to benefit their financial outlook.

At least this restructuring of Mathieu's deal will not hurt the team on the field like releasing him might have, given his track record.

The 2013 third-round pick has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Saints throughout his career and has a resume that includes a Super Bowl title, three First-Team All-Pro selections and three Pro Bowl nods.

The 2025 season will be his fourth with the Saints, although none of those Pro Bowls or All-Pro honors came with New Orleans.

He was still solid last year with 62 tackles, seven passes defended, three interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery while appearing in all 17 games. He is yet to miss a game with the Saints and will look to keep that streak going into the new season now that his contract situation has reportedly been settled.
