NFL Rumors: Geno Smith Requested Seahawks Trade After Not Countering Contract Offer

Julia StumbaughMar 11, 2025

Geno Smith did not counter a contract offer from the Seattle Seahawks before requesting a trade, according to Fox Sports and the Seattle Times' Bob Condotta.

Smith was reportedly traded last Friday to the Las Vegas Raiders with one year and $31 million remaining on his contract.

Prior to the trade, the Seahawks offered Smith a two-year extension in the range of $40-45 million per year, per Condotta.

According to Fox Sports, Smith officially requested a trade from the Seahawks on Thursday night. The following day, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Smith had been traded after he and the Seahawks "were not able to make any progress towards a new deal."

According to Condotta, the Seahawks offered Smith his extension "early in the week and hoped to wrap things up by the end of the week."

"Seattle, instead, is said to have gotten no counteroffer," Condotta wrote, adding: "The team getting no counteroffer from Smith was all it needed to know that a deal might not be getting done before the free-agent signing period."

The Seahawks also needed to know before Smith was due a $16 million roster bonus on March 16, according to Condotta and Spotrac.

The roster bonus now becomes a potential deadline for the Raiders to figure out an extension for Smith.

NBC Sports' Mike Florio reported Tuesday that Smith is expected to "arrive in Nevada without a new contract." The Raiders could now either decide to resume extension negotiations with Smith, or use his contract year as a potential bridge to drafting a quarterback in 2026.

The Seahawks have meanwhile used the money reportedly earmarked for Smith to sign Sam Darnold in free agency. Schefter reported Monday the Seahawks brought Darnold in on a three-year, $110.5 million deal with $55 million guaranteed.
