Giants Must Target Aaron Rodgers Over Russell Wilson as Temporary Fix Amid NFL Rumors

Erik BeastonMar 11, 2025

Mike Florio of NBC Sports reported that, despite the real possibility of Aaron Rodgers signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers as soon as Tuesday, the New York Giants could still be in play for the four-time league MVP "if they make him a richer offer."

SNYTV's Connor Hughes linked the team to Russell Wilson, especially if it fails to ink a deal with Rodgers.

Both would be short-term fixes for a team desperately in search of a quarterback since Eli Manning retired in 2020, but Rodgers is the better of the two options and the player the Giants must target.

Wilson completed 63.7 percent of his passes in 2024, but also tossed just 16 touchdowns in 11 games for the Steelers. He started efficiently but his play diminished as the season went on and the team lost his last five starts.

Rodgers did not have a stellar season for the Jets by any stretch of the imagination, quarterbacking the team to a 5-12 season while throwing 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Eight of those touchdowns came in the final five games, though, and he appeared to be more comfortable down the stretch than he was at any point earlier in the year.

Still one of the greatest throwers of the ball ever, Rodgers may not have the raw athleticism and ability to evade the rush that he used to, but the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer still has enough physical weapons to make plays that Wilson just has not exhibited the ability to over the last two seasons.

The Giants may not have the weapons that Pittsburgh does, especially after the black and yellow traded for D.K. Metcalf, but they do have an emerging star in Malik Nabers, a potentially less combustible receiver room, and a head coach who specializes in offense in Brian Daboll.

For a guy playing out the final year or two of his career, with an opportunity to help guide a young quarterback if the Giants do draft either Cam Ward or Shadeur Sanders in May, there are far worse situations for Rodgers to find himself in.

That he has a home in New York and would not be required to pack up his life again and move would seemingly make it even more interesting for the veteran.

The Giants cannot rely on a situation that looks better on paper to be why Rodgers chooses to finish his career out with Big Blue. The front office needs to court him, make him feel desired and show him they want him there.

They have to play to his ego and take the steps to prove that they are willing to do whatever it takes to sign him but, also, surround him with talent.

The Steelers already have plenty of that in spades and a proven winner of a head coach, with a Super Bowl win to his name and another appearance, against Rodgers and the Packers at the end of the 2010 season, ironically enough.

Wilson will be a fine stop-gap for the Giants until they have a better option in place, but Rodgers has proven he can still sling the ball and provide greater consistency under center, making him the better fit for an organization that needs just that at the most important position on the field.

Now it is time to be aggressive, get a deal done with Rodgers, and stop waiting for the right pieces to come to them.
