49ers Must Lock Down Brock Purdy Contract Extension amid Free Agent, Trade Rumors

Zach BuckleyMar 11, 2025

NFL free agency is off to a fast start for the San Francisco 49ers, and not in a good way.

The receipts are coming due for big-name pursuits from offseasons past, and the Niners no longer have the budget—or at least the appetite—to cover the cost.

So, early on at least, it's been a mass exodus out of San Francisco. The 49ers, who got this ball rolling with the Deebo Samuel trade, have seen free-agent suitors snatch up the likes of Charvarius Ward, Dre Geenlaw, Aaron Banks and Talanoa Hufanga, among others. Oh, and there are trade rumors swirling around Brandon Aiyuk, plus mainstay fullback Kyle Juszcyk was just informed he's being released, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

These aren't your slightly older sibling's 49ers anymore. And that's fine, so long as they eventually cough up the coin to ensure these remain Brock Purdy's 49ers.

What kind of contract will it take to keep the signal-caller in the mix? Great question. NFL insider Jason La Canfora reported San Francisco's initial offers started at a $45 million salary, but The Athletic's Dianna Russini has refuted that.

It might take weeks, or even months, before the numbers get all the way crunched at the negotiating table. The faithful just better be prepared to see a big amount whenever pen gets put to paper.

The 49ers are clearly bracing themselves for what's to come. As they should be.

Is it ideal for an organization that sees itself as a perennial Super Bowl contender to see this much talent head for the exits? Not at all. You know what's worse, though? Failing to keep a franchise quarterback around.

Look, not everyone will be on board with draping that label on Purdy, but he has done an awful lot of winning and provided plenty of efficient production so far in his career. The final pick of the 2022 draft has already booked a pair of playoff trips, and both extended at least to the NFC Championship.

Both Purdy and the team finally encountered some turbulence this past season, but injuries impacted just about every playmaker on the roster. Purdy admittedly didn't play great (20 passing touchdowns against 12 interceptions in 15 games), but conditions were so far from perfect that any long-term proclamations about his performance would feel decidedly short-sighted.

Moving forward with Purdy will be tricky. That's already obvious.

He'll go from pocketing a six-figure base salary to inking a nine-figure contract extension. The rest of the payroll must account for that increase.

In other words, gone are the days when San Francisco can turbo-charge the team with one star after the next around him. Now, it'll fall on this front office to make every non-Purdy dollar count and on this coaching staff to maximize whatever roster those executives can assemble.

That's a difficult task. It's also far less daunting than starting over without a high-end quarterback. And even if Purdy isn't Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson, he's still a good-to-great player at the league's most important position.

The Niners are wise not to automatically hand him a blank check, but they're also smart to take a patient, financially focused approach to free agency. They know that massive Purdy payday is coming, and they're already budgeting around it.

It's the only way in which they can proceed. These free-agency departures might temporarily sting, but stomaching these subtractions in order to keep Purdy under center for years to come is a necessary part of the process. Building this roster back up would be a million times more challenging with uncertainty at the quarterback spot.
