Projecting Brock Purdy, Mega QB Extensions After Josh Allen Contract

Alex KayMar 10, 2025

Josh Allen just set the table for the star quarterbacks awaiting contract extensions.

Allen agreed to a blockbuster six-year, $330 million deal with the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The deal includes a record-setting $250 million in guaranteed money, breaking the previous high of $230 million set by Deshaun Watson.

Several other prominent signal-callers could soon follow in Allen's footsteps with some impressive deals of their own.

With that in mind, let's look at what some of these contracts could look like in the coming years.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

Detroit Lions v San Francisco 49ers

Brock Purdy's extension should be the next major domino to fall in the quarterback market.

The San Francisco 49ers passer became eligible for a new deal as soon as the club's campaign wrapped up. After making under $1 million per season on his rookie contract, Purdy's extension will represent a truly massive raise for the No. 262 overall pick in the 2022 draft.

According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, Purdy has been offered $45 million per season by the Niners. While that's certainly life-changing money—even more so if most of it is guaranteed—it would rank outside the top 10 at the position and well below an estimated Spotrac value of nearly $60 million annually.

While the 49ers are "playing hardball" as La Canfora described, it's hard to imagine the club letting the 25-year-old hit the open market after his current deal runs up in 2026.

Although Purdy doesn't have an MVP trophy on his resume like Allen, he's been in that discussion previously and helped guide the Niners to a Super Bowl in only his second professional season. With older and injury-prone signal-callers like Kirk Cousins inking contracts worth $45 million annually as recently as last year, it's clear Purdy should be much closer to in value to his Buffalo counterpart.

ESPN's Dan Graziano reported that Purdy's extension could potentially even eclipse the $55 million per year, a fair mark for the value he's provided and should continue to offer the Niners.

With general manager John Lynch going on record to say he wants Purdy around for a long time, it won't be a surprise to see the two sides eventually come to a deal that pays the quarterback in the upper echelon of his peers with a good chunk of guaranteed cash.

Contract Projection: Six years, $324 million

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans

AFC Divisional Playoffs: Houston Texans v Kansas City Chiefs

The Houston Texans still have some time to capitalize on a championship window during C.J. Stroud's cheap rookie contract, but they'll have to keep the long-term future in mind while signing free agents and issuing extensions in the coming seasons.

Stroud's scale contract is set to run up in 2026, although the Texans will likely pick up the fifth-year option for the 2022 No. 2 overall pick. He'll be in line for an extension after next season, however, and he could quickly become one of the league's highest-paid players.

Even though Stroud took a step back in Year 2, he was still at the helm of a team that went 10-7 and won a playoff game in back-to-back seasons. While he didn't earn a Pro Bowl spot or enter the MVP discussion in 2024, he's projected to remain a high-end starter on a competitive squad for the foreseeable future.

Expect Stroud to sign a comparable deal to Purdy, a player who was drafted one year prior to him and has started his career similarly hot. Given their age, impact on their respective franchises and bright outlook, both should soon rate among the league's highest-paid quarterbacks.

Projection: Five years, $285 million

Baker Mayfield, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFC Wild Card Playoffs: Washington Commanders v Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Baker Mayfield may have only joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two years ago, but he'll soon be up for a third contract with the organization.

Mayfield has been a major boon for a Bucs squad that didn't have an heir apparent to Tom Brady lined up following the legendary quarterback's retirement in 2022. Mayfield vastly exceeded expectations in his first season with the organization, earning a Pro Bowl nod and leading his side to a playoff victory that year.

That performance resulted in Mayfield inking a three-year, $100 million deal to stay around through the 2026 season. Considering the signal-caller improved in nearly every major metric year-over-year in 2024—including throwing for career-highs of 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns—while keeping the Bucs atop the NFC South, it wouldn't be a shock to see him stick around well past the end of his current contract.

Although the Bucs don't have to make an imminent decision on Mayfield's future, it would be wise for the front office to start making plans for another extension.

If Mayfield continues to play at the level he was at in 2024—although it's possible he'll take a step back with former offensive coordinator Liam Coen exiting for the Jacksonville Jaguars—he'll be poised for a major bump in pay from the $33.3 million he's currently earning annually.

Even going into his age-32 season in 2027, Mayfield should easily command $55 million or more if he hasn't regressed significantly.

Projection: Three years, $165 million

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

NFL: FEB 09 Super Bowl LIX - Eagles vs Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes may have already signed one of the most lengthy and lucrative deals in NFL history, but the Kansas City Chiefs star looks in line to cash in yet again.

Despite signing a gargantuan 10-year, $503 million extension in 2020 that could keep the QB in Kansas City through the 2031 campaign, Mahomes has already been rewarded by having his deal altered to add more value. Insiders expect that to happen again within the next two years.

According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, Kansas City's brass plans to rework the contract in 2026 should Mahomes continue playing at a high level. The team performed a similar maneuver in 2023 offseason, restructuring the deal to create cap space while paying Mahomes a whopping $210.6 million over four years.

Although Mahomes did come up short of an unprecedented championship three-peat after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, he's still the best quarterback in the league after taking his Chiefs to five of the last six title games. If he can continue this torrid pace for two more seasons, he'll almost certainly see his contract value bumped up once again make him the highest-paid player at the position.

Expect Mahomes to reset the market after the 2026 season. Barring an unforeseen injury or dramatic dip in production, his reworked deal should become the first to pay a quarterback $65 million or more annually.

Projection: Four years, $260 million
