Report: Jameis Winston in Talks with 49ers, Chargers in NFL Free Agency; Giants Linked

Paul KasabianMar 10, 2025

The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers are both in talks with free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston for a potential backup role, while the New York Giants could be in the mix as well pending their conversations with other signal-callers, per NFL insider Josina Anderson.

The 31-year-old Winston, who has played 10 NFL seasons, spent last year with the Cleveland Browns. He played in 12 games (seven starts) and completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 2,121 yards (7.2 yards per attempt), 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

In San Francisco, Winston would back up starter Brock Purdy. In Los Angeles, Winston would be second-string to starter Justin Herbert.

The Giants are the most interesting case, as they didn't have a starting quarterback entering free agency's legal tampering period. In theory, Winston could be QB1 for the 2025 season if some of Big Blue's potential options don't work out.

For now, though, Winston is an intriguing option who should be getting a backup job at worst. He's certainly productive (but also turnover-prone) and easily capable of holding down the fort for teams who find themselves in need of a signal-caller.

Players like Jameis Winston or Joe Flacco (in the present day) or Ryan Fitzpatrick (in the past) aren't found that easily. Some teams can be in serious trouble if their starter goes down, but high-quality backups/borderline QB1s in this league certainly help ease the situation.

In Cleveland this past year, Winston took over a Browns team that was flailing after Deshaun Watson, who had struggled all season, suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. But the Browns competed with Winston in the lineup, even knocking off the eventual AFC North champion Cleveland Browns in a big upset.

So Winston can provide competence (and excitement, given his play) at the position for any team. All told, he shouldn't be without an NFL home for long as free agency gets underway.
