Von Miller, Commanders Reportedly Agree to Contract amid Pass-Rusher's IG Post
Von Miller has a new home.
The veteran edge-rusher signed a contract with the Washington Commanders, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Adam Schefter of ESPN added it was expected to be a one-year deal.
Miller also teased his signing with a post on Instagram, writing "DC… What’s good??" in the caption.
The 36-year-old was expected to finish his career with the Buffalo Bills after signing a six-year, $120 million deal with the team ahead of the 2022 season. That deal didn't age well—injuries limited Miller to 36 games over the past three seasons, and he accumulated just 14 sacks, 17 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits and a forced fumble in that time.
For context, Miller had three individual seasons with 14 or more sacks, four individual seasons with 17 or more tackles for loss and seven individual seasons with at least 23 quarterback hits before joining Buffalo.
Granted, the eight-time Pro Bowler, three-time first-team All-Pro selection and two-time champion is in the twilight of his career, so regression is to be expected. That downturn in production, paired with freeing up $8.4 million in cap space, ultimately prompted the Bills to release him this offseason, absorbing $15.4 million in dead cap to do so.
Washington will be hoping that Miller can turn back the clock in the 2025 season. It's not a bad wager to place, considering the short-term nature of the deal.
The Commanders were tied for 11th in sacks last season, with 43, led by Dante Fowler's 10.5. But he left in free agency and the Commanders can't bank of inside linebacker Frankie Luvu replicating his career-best eight sacks from a year ago.
So the pass rush needed to be addressed, and Miller made sense as a target. He'll be tasked with helping the Commanders get over the top after reaching the NFC Championship Game a year ago.
