NHL Rumors: Brad Marchand, Bruins Clashed Over Value of Contract Before Panthers Trade

Mike ChiariMar 8, 2025

The Boston Bruins and forward Brad Marchand's inability to agree to monetary terms of a new contract reportedly led to the decision to trade him to the Florida Panthers on Friday.

According to ESPN's Emily Kaplan, the Bruins and Marchand were discussing a three-year contract extension, but Marchand "didn't feel the money offered was equal to his value."

Rather than potentially losing him for nothing in free agency at the end of the season, the Bruins made the shocking decision to trade their captain to the Panthers just before Friday's NHL trade deadline.

In return, Florida sent Boston a conditional second-round pick that will become a first-round pick if Marchand plays in at least 50 percent of the Panthers' playoff games over the first two rounds.

Marchand, who will turn 37 in May, spent his entire 16-year NHL career in Boston prior to Friday's trade.

Over 1,090 career regular-season games, the 2006 third-round draft pick has racked up 422 goals and 554 assists for 976 points.

In the illustrious history of the Bruins, who were one of the Original Six NHL franchises, Marchand is fourth all-time in goals, sixth in assists and fifth in points.

Marchand was part of the Bruins' most recent Stanley Cup-winning team in 2011 and is a four-time All-Star.

Additionally, Marchand has enjoyed enormous success representing Canada internationally, winning two World Junior Championship gold medals and one World Championship gold medal.

He was also part of Canada's winning teams in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 4 Nations Face-Off, which took place last month.

Although Marchand's production is down compared to when he posted 80 or more points in five of six seasons from 2016 to 2022, he had 67 points in both 2022-23 and 2023-24, and through 61 games this season, he has 21 goals and 26 assists for 47 points.

Despite being just three points out of the final playoff wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, Boston decided to sell at the deadline, trading away forward Charlie Coyle and defenseman Brandon Carlo at the deadline. They previously traded forward Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers, too.

The Bruins did acquire some pieces that could potentially help down the stretch as well, though, including forward Casey Mittelstadt and defenseman Henri Jokiharju.

If the Bruins miss the playoffs this season, it will mark the first time that has happened since the 2015-16 campaign.

As for Marchand, he lands with a top Stanley Cup contender in the reigning Stanley Cup champion Panthers.

Florida leads the Atlantic Division and has the second-most points in the Eastern Conference with 81.

While superstar forward Matthew Tkachuk is likely out until at least the start of the playoffs due to a groin injury, Marchand can replace some of the grit and scoring ability he brought to the table despite being much smaller in stature.

If the Panthers get Tkachuk back for the playoffs to play alongside major trade acquisitions in Marchand and defenseman Seth Jones, Florida will likely be the team to beat once again.
