Raiders, Seahawks' Updated Salary Cap, Depth Charts After Reported Geno Smith Trade

Julia StumbaughMar 7, 2025

The Las Vegas Raiders are set to debut a new starting quarterback for the fourth straight season.

The Raiders sent a third-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks in order to acquire Geno Smith, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday night.

The Raiders' quarterback depth chart now consists of Geno Smith in front of Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Carter Bradley.

The Seahawks are meanwhile still searching for a QB1 to top a depth chart currently consisting of Sam Howell and Jaren Hall.

Smith is currently signed through the 2025 season at a cap hit of $31 million.

He has been seeking an extension of at least $40 million per season and is "expected to get a new deal with Las Vegas," according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

Although Smith is currently set to receive $16 million as a roster bonus on March 16, Spotrac's Michael Ginnitti reported that could change as "it is largely expected that an extension will be processed soon after the league year begins next Wednesday."

The Raiders have room to maneuver with more than $80 million in projected cap space prior to the trade, per Over the Cap. Only the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers are currently more flexible.

The Seahawks meanwhile took on $13.5 million in dead cap but freed up $31 million thanks to the trade, per Spotrac.

The move gives the Seahawks a projected total of $62 million in cap space, which ranks seventh among all NFL teams, per Ginnitti.

The Seahawks could use that space to make an offer to pending free agent Sam Darnold, who is coming off of the best starting season of his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Seahawks are "expected to explore" Darnold as an option, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. After moving Smith, the Seahawks now have enough cap space to potentially compete with the offer the Vikings have reportedly made to Darnold.
