Report: Tom Brady 'Onboard' with Geno Smith Trade to Raiders amid Sam Darnold Rumors

Julia StumbaughMar 7, 2025

Tom Brady may have had a say in the Las Vegas Raiders' decision to trade for Geno Smith.

Brady was "fully onboard" with the Raiders acquiring Smith from the Seattle Seahawks on Friday, according to Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.

According to Schultz, Smith requested a trade from the Seahawks on Thursday night after talks to extend his contract past 2025 stalled.

"Pete Carroll - with Tom Brady fully onboard - spoke to his old buddy John Schneider about the framework of a trade throughout the evening and well into today," Schultz wrote.

The Raiders ultimately gave up a third-round pick in order to acquire Smith, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Schefter noted the Raiders did not have an extension in place at the time of the trade.

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Smith is looking for between $40 million and $45 million per year on his next contract.

He is "expected to get a new deal with Las Vegas," according to Russini.

The trade will reunite Smith with former Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, whom Brady also reportedly played a role in bringing to Las Vegas.

The Associated Press' Mark Anderson previously reported that Raiders owner Mark Davis "ceded much control" of the team's general manager and head coach searches to Brady, who was approved as a minority owner of the Raiders last October.

Per Anderson, Brady "helped lead a committee" that settled on Carroll as head coach and John Spytek as general manager.

“We happen to have the greatest of all time to help us and to see clearly, and we’re going to lean on Tom as much as we possibly can for his insights because nobody has the insights that he has,” Carroll said in January, per Anderson. “He’s that unique.

"But the quarterback position is one of the positions on the team, and we’ve got to make it all fit together well.”

Smith's best season with the Seahawks came after he took over for Russell Wilson in 2022, although he hasn't reached that same level of success since. Brady will now hope bringing Smith and Carroll back together can help the pair put together a similarly dominant campaign in Las Vegas.
