Report: DK Metcalf Requests Trade from Seahawks, Eyes New Contract on Contender

Julia StumbaughMar 5, 2025

DK Metcalf has requested a trade after six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday.

The Seahawks "have agreed to explore options" for the 27-year-old wide receiver, per Pelissero.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Metcalf's trade request took place "after a series of conversations over the past two weeks."

According to Schefter, Metcalf wants both a new contract and to play for a contender.

While the market is still developing for the wideout, at least one team is willing to trade a third-round pick, according to NFL Insider Josina Anderson.

Metcalf has one year remaining on the three-year, $72 million deal he signed with the Seahawks in 2022.

Despite missing two games with an MCL sprain, Metcalf came just shy of his third straight 1,000-receiving-yard season in 2024.

He finished the campaign with 66 catches for 992 yards with five touchdowns in 15 games. He also received 108 targets, his lowest total since his 2019 rookie season, as Jaxon Smith-Njigba emerged as a top target for Geno Smith.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider was noncommittal when asked at last week's NFL Scouting Combine "where things stand" with Metcalf, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.

“Where things stand? I’m not sure," Schneider answered. "He’s on our team. He’s a big, strong, fast, physical receiver.”

That answer sparked trade rumors connecting Metcalf to teams, including the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

The Packers could be in the market for a top wideout after Josh Jacobs said in February he believed the team needed a "proven" WR1. The franchise was tied to an interest in Metcalf, although reports conflict over whether the Packers and Seahawks have actually discussed a trade.

The Patriots have meanwhile "kicked the tires" on a potential Metcalf trade, according to Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald.

The Packers are coming off consecutive playoff appearances behind Jordan Love, while the Patriots are looking to take another step forward during Drake Maye's first full season as the starter.

Although both franchises could conceivably pitch themselves as future contenders to Metcalf if they decide to pursue him, they may face steep competition on the trade market this offseason. As noted by Pelissero, the incoming class of free-agent and draft receivers is considered relatively weak.

The Seahawks will meanwhile need to turn their attention toward building out their receiving depth this offseason as they brace to lose both Metcalf and veteran wideout Tyler Lockett, who indicated earlier on Wednesday he will be released after 10 seasons with the franchise.
