McShay suggests the ownership might have gotten involved to push the team to consider Sanders.
Sanders was arguably the biggest star in college football over the past two seasons as the starting quarterback at Colorado. His play was also fantastic with 7,364 yards, 64 touchdowns and a 71.8 completion percentage in 24 games since the start of 2023.
However, his draft stock has fluctuated during the past few months, with fellow quarterback Cam Ward seemingly locked in as the No. 1 pick of the draft to the Tennessee Titans.
Ward pulled ahead as the top quarterback in this draft coming out of the combine. He had a fantastic 2024 with 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns to lead Miami to its first 10-win season in seven years.
The Giants could still be an option for Sanders at No. 3 overall, however, with the organization still in need of a long-term quarterback since moving on from Daniel Jones last year. The team added veterans Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson this offseason, but Sanders would still have the opportunity to be the face of the franchise.
B/R's NFL scouting department has Travis Hunter ranked as the best overall prospect in the 2025 draft. Ward is the top-ranked quarterback, with Sanders at No. 2.
The first round of the 2025 NFL draft will take place on April 25 starting at 8 p.m. ET.
