Matthew Stafford Trade Rumors: Giants, Raiders Never Offered Top Picks in 2025 Draft

Zach BacharMar 3, 2025

The New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders never considered moving their top 10 picks in the 2025 NFL draft for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.

"The third pick was never in the equation for the Giants, and my sense is the Raiders never considered moving the sixth pick in a trade for Stafford, either," Breer reported Monday

The "feeling" was that a potential trade would’ve been centered around New York's No. 34 overall pick, per Breer.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Friday that Stafford and the Rams agreed to a restructured contract to keep him in Los Angeles.

With both the Giants and Raiders searching for a new starter under center for the 2025 season, their desire to acquire Stafford prior to his reworked contract was apparent.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported on Wednesday that the two teams had "significant interest" in the veteran signal-caller.

While both New York and Las Vegas were reportedly attempting to add the 37-year-old, Stafford's age and uncertainty surrounding his contract likely kept the two front offices from including their top draft picks in negotiations.

The Giants finished with a 3-14 record in 2024, releasing quarterback Daniel Jones during the middle of the season. Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito closed out the year for New York, owning a combined record of 1-6 in seven starts.

Las Vegas also started three separate quarterbacks last season after failing to add a signal-caller in the 2024 draft. Gardner Minshew, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder combined to throw for 19 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions.

The Raiders ended the year with a 4-13 record.

Even though New York and Las Vegas were targeting Stafford on the trade market, both teams didn't appear to be willing to offer any draft capital higher than a second-round pick.
