NFL Insider: Deebo Samuel Commanders Contract Extension 'Unlikely' After 49ers Trade

Zach BacharMar 3, 2025

Despite acquiring Deebo Samuel in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, the Washington Commanders aren't expected to hand the wide receiver a long-term deal.

According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, the Commanders are "unlikely" to extend Samuel before the start of the 2025 season.

On Saturday, Washington acquired the standout receiver from San Francisco while sending out a fifth-round pick in return.

The Commanders didn't give up major draft capital to make the swap due to their ability to "move on cleanly" from Samuel if he can't bounce back in 2025, per Standig. Washington also took on his $17.55 million remaining salary as part of the trade.

Samuel is set to enter free agency at the end of his 2025 campaign.

While the 29-year-old racked up 1,770 yards from scrimmage and made a Pro Bowl appearance in 2021, he's failed to reach 900 all-purpose yards in two of the three years since.

This included the 2024 season, as Samuel averaged a career-low 44.7 receiving yards per game. He also recorded a mere 3.2 yards per attempt on the ground, his worst mark in the NFL.

If he can put together a resurgent 2025 campaign, he should provide a boost to a Commanders offense that helped the team make a surprising NFC Championship Game appearance.

He can also operate as a versatile weapon for Jayden Daniels, with the quarterback coming off an impressive inaugural season in which he earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.

While the Commanders will attempt to remain a threat in the NFC following their latest trade for Samuel, an extension agreement between both sides may not be reached during the offseason.
