Gil is the reigning AL Rookie of the Year winner and is set to be a core piece of the Yankees rotation this season.
Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 151.2 innings in 2024. He recorded 171 strikeouts and also made two appearances in the postseason. The right-hander was set to be in a middle-of-rotation role and potentially help the Yankees defend their AL crown.
New York went 94-68 last season and lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. The team lost Juan Soto in free agency but added left-handed starter Max Fried, outfielder Cody Bellinger and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to the loaded roster.
This move comes amid trade rumors involving starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who may have been on the outside looking in to make the rotation.
In Gil's potentially prolonged absence, New York will rely on Gerrit Cole, Fried, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt and potentially Stroman to carry the load.
