NFL Rumors: Matthew Stafford Returning to Rams Seems 'More Likely' amid Raiders Buzz

Andrew PetersFeb 28, 2025

Though the Las Vegas Raiders have emerged as a serious suitor for Matthew Stafford, he could reportedly stay put this offseason.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Stafford staying with the Los Angeles Rams "feels more likely to those involved." Rapoport noted that nothing is final regarding Stafford's decision.

The Raiders, along with the New York Giants, have been pursuing Stafford since the Rams permitted him to gauge his market with other teams while negotiating a reworked contract with Los Angeles.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini noted on the Scoop City podcast that Las Vegas or New York could give Stafford a two-year, $90 million deal while the Rams prefer a one-year deal worth around $40 million. ESPN's Jordan Raanan reported Friday that the Giants are "underdogs" to land Stafford.

Amid Rapoport's report about Stafford's potential return to Los Angeles, Russini reported that the Rams and the signal caller are set to meet in person on Friday to discuss his future. She added that "a decision is expected soon."

Stafford is coming off a decent season that saw him collect 3,762 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and eight interceptions while leading Los Angeles to the divisional round of the playoffs. Though his best days are likely behind him, Stafford is more than capable of leading a team to the playoffs with the right roster around him.

Stafford's current Rams contract would pay him $27 million for the 2025 season. Even at his age of 37, it's fair to argue that he's worth more than that, especially considering that the top nine highest-paid quarterbacks all make north of $50 million per year.

Stafford is reportedly seeking a contract that puts him at $50 million per year, though at this point it seems he may need to compromise to return to the Rams.
