Video: Ben Johnson Jokes Penei Sewell Threw Better Pass Than Jared Goff in Lions Drill
Ben Johnson took his book of trick plays to the Chicago Bears when he was hired as their new head coach, but the Detroit Lions can apparently take solace knowing they might be able to turn to offensive tackle Penei Sewell if they need a surprising throw in 2025.
"The best part of that was he threw a dime every single time in practice," the former Lions offensive coordinator said during a Wednesday interview with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio and Chris Simms. "… It was better than some other people, Jared Goff. He was pretty darn good throwing on the run"

Florio pointed out that Johnson was likely joking, but it was a notable comment considering it seemed like Sewell was going to unleash a throw during a particular trick play in the 2024 season.
Ironically, Johnson dialed up the play against his new team the Bears when Detroit hosted Chicago in November.
Goff tossed the ball to Sewell, who looked like he was about to throw it before deciding otherwise:
While he didn't get to show off his arm, he did turn heads with quite the stiff arm.
Offensive line is a position of need for the Bears this offseason, as figuring out ways to better protect Caleb Williams will help them unlock the full potential of an offense that also features DJ Moore, Rome Odunze and Cole Kmet.
They surely won't evaluate offensive line prospects and free agents based on their ability to throw, but Johnson might not be afraid to dial something up if said linemen can make a play with their arm.
