His representation approached Seahawks leadership about an extension ahead of the 2024 season, but Seattle held to a "long-standing team policy of not extending contracts with multiple years remaining," per NBC Sports' Charean Williams.
Smith's last deal was the three-year, $75 million contract he inked in March 2023. The agreement came after he was named Comeback Player of the Year by reviving his career as a starting quarterback with a Pro Bowl 2022 campaign.
Smith now heads into negotiations coming off an inconsistent 2024 season, during which he still recorded a career-high 4,320 passing yards on a career-best 70.4 completion percentage.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported in December that Seahawks coaches "feel like they could have done more to help him from a scheme standpoint, both in the run game and in play action."
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald also said last month he wants Smith to remain the team's starter going forward.
The Seahawks could hope building a stronger offensive line around Smith will help him find more success next fall, although the length of the quarterback's next contract could be limited as he heads into his age-35 season.
Schneider indicated the Seahawks planned to look to future drafts for their next franchise quarterback, per Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune:
Schneider said there is no deadline for negotiations, per Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times.
Smith is due a $10 million roster bonus on March 16, per Spotrac. The quarterback is currently set to cost $44.5 million against the cap in 2025, a number the Seahawks could look to decrease during upcoming negotiations.
