J.J. Watt 'Absolutely' Plans to Honor Burnley Bet, Sign With Bengals If Terms Are Met
Retired NFL star J.J. Watt is a man of his word.
In January, the former Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals star shared a screenshot of a conversation with Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. During their chat, he said he'd un-retire and play for the Cincinnati Bengals if Trafford kept a clean sheet for the rest of the 2024-25 season:
Trafford has upheld his end of the bargain so far, leading Watt to say Tuesday on the Dan Patrick Show that what started as a joke has become legitimate. He told the host he'll "absolutely follow through" if the goalkeeper maintains his clean sheet streak.
Following Burnley's 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday last Friday, Watt pretended to be looking into the Cincinnati real estate market ahead of a stunning move to the Bengals:
Watt underlined how Trafford has already beat the odds by extending the bet this far. Burnley's 12 consecutive shutouts are a record for the second division of English soccer. The record across all four levels is 14 matches.
The Clarets have another 12 fixtures left on their Championship schedule and they play Preston North End in the FA Cup on Saturday. There's almost no mathematical chance they fail to concede another goal between now and early May.
But it has been fun to watch Watt start to sweat a bit.
