Titans HC Brian Callahan: 'Very Realistic' for Travis Hunter to Play Both Ways in NFL

Joseph ZuckerFeb 25, 2025

Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan envisions Colorado star Travis Hunter maintaining a modified two-way role at the next level.

Callahan told reporters Tuesday it's "very realistic" to think Hunter can suit up on offense and defense, though he said that might be a gradual process. The coach suggested the Heisman Trophy winner would be best utilized as a cornerback initially before widening his usage at wide receiver:

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry, meanwhile, labeled Hunter a "unicorn" but said he thought receiver is his optimal position:

Hunter is by far the most interesting prospect in the 2025 NFL draft class because of how much he excelled at two different positions in college.

The MMQB's Albert Breer spoke with a pair of draft experts, NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah and The Ringer's Todd McShay, to get their read on the standout talent. McShay said Hunter reminded him of the New York Jets' Garrett Wilson as a wideout, while Jeremiah compared him to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith on offense and Eagles cornerback Darius Slay Jr. on defense.

McShay did question, however, whether Hunter could be used situationally as a corner if he were primarily a wide receiver.

"I think he's a more advanced receiver and better receiver than he is a corner," McShay said to Breer. "But I don't see a scenario where he's a full-time receiver that you're working in packages as a corner. I think it's the reverse. I think he's rare. You have to have a plan. My plan would very likely be let's develop him as a corner and put in installs every week where we utilize him at wide receiver."

If you're a fan who wants to see Hunter split his time between receiver and cornerback, then Callahan's comments are encouraging.

The Titans have the No. 1 overall pick and could plausibly take Hunter over his Buffs teammate Shedeur Sanders, Miami quarterback Cam Ward or Penn State edge-rusher Abdul Carter. Should he land in Tennessee, it sounds like the team would be willing to eventually harness his one-of-a-kind abilities.
