Daniel Jeremiah, Todd McShay Rank Cam Ward over Shedeur Sanders: 'So F--king Chill'

The debate over who the top quarterback is in this year’s draft class has been going on since the start of the college football season and will likely last until draft night. 

Both Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders have made strong cases to be the first quarterback off the board, but only time will tell who is selected first. 

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah and The Ringer’s Todd McShay recently weighed in on the discussion and agreed that Ward is the better prospect. 

“It’s almost like watching an electrical storm in the summer,” McShay said on the Todd McShay Show (h/t Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer). “It’s exciting and it’s different. You’re also like what did I just see? He’s so f--king chill. He’s so laissez-faire. There are certain plays where you’re like, Does he know we’re in the middle of a game? Does he think it’s a 7 on 7? But sometimes your greatest strength can be your fatal flaw. He tests the water too much, and he’s casual. … And of the guys we’re talking about, the ball pops out of his hand.”

Jeremiah noted that Ward’s potential bodes well with AFC teams, which have the first two picks in the draft. 

“You got all the cyborg quarterbacks in the AFC,” Jeremiah said. “That’s why I believe in the top of the draft, especially in the AFC, you have to chase ceiling. If you get it, you’re golden. If you don’t, you’ve got to keep trying to get it. Settling for floor in the AFC just seems like a losing proposition. The growing list of cyborg quarterbacks, it’s ridiculous.”

Jeremiah added, “I think Cam is the ceiling guy and Shedeur is the floor guy.”

Ward, who spent two seasons at Incarnate Word and two at Washington State before arriving in Miami last year, had 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2024, adding 204 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. 

Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department projects him to go first overall to the Tennessee Titans. 

Sanders, who began his career at Jackson State before transferring to Colorado ahead of the 2023 season, had 4,134 passing yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last year. B/R’s Scouting Department has him landing with the New York Giants at No. 3. 

The NFL combine might see one quarterback become a clear favorite over the other, but the two will undoubtedly get drafted very early this year.
