Travis Hunter Compared to Garrett Wilson, DeVonta, Slay by Daniel Jeremiah, McShay

Zach BacharFeb 24, 2025

Colorado two-way standout Travis Hunter received high praise for his performances on both sides of the ball leading up to the 2025 NFL draft.

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay compared Hunter's receiving skill to Garrett Wilson of the New York Jets, while NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah brought up Philadelphia Eagles wideout DeVonta Smith (via Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer).

Jeremiah also compared Hunter's defense to six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay.

Wilson earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2022 and has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each season of his career. Meanwhile, Smith has racked up 4,011 yards through four years in the NFL and served as the No. 2 receiver on an Eagles team coming off a Super Bowl LIX victory.

Hunter thrived at both wide receiver and cornerback on the Buffaloes in 2024, catching 96 passes for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also recorded 36 tackles, 11 passes defensed and four interceptions.

The 21-year-old was ranked as the No. 1 overall player in the 2025 draft class on the latest big board from Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department. B/R NFL Scout Cory Giddings also highlighted Hunter's versatility.

"Hunter combines impressive length with rare body control and athleticism, making him a standout performer on both sides of the ball," Giddings wrote in his scouting report. "His high football IQ and ability to quickly adapt and excel in multiple roles have made him a consensus All-American and one of the most intriguing prospects entering the draft."

Hunter's exact position at the NFL level is yet to be determined, with NFL.com's Lance Zierlein reporting that at least three teams see him as "a full-time cornerback who can take some snaps at WR."

Regardless of which role the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner ends up playing, there's belief that he can succeed as both a cornerback and wideout.
