Malik Nabers: '100%' Travis Hunter 'Has to be a CB and a WR' in NFL amid Debate

Joseph ZuckerFeb 24, 2025

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers feels "100 percent" that Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter can succeed playing both ways in the NFL.

"I don't want to put a ceiling on his ability of athleticism," Nabers said to The Athletic. "(As a receiver), he can go up and get the ball, (make) contested catches. His route-running ability, he has to be a cornerback and a receiver, he can run pretty routes."

Given the physical demands of the NFL, the accepted wisdom is that Hunter will eventually have to pick one position over the other. In that respect, it was somewhat notable when he was initially listed as only a cornerback for the Scouting Combine.

That's far from a definitive indicator of where he'll stick at the next level, though.

NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, for his part, told Albert Breer of The MMQB he believed Hunter "was more impactful offensively just because he's touching the ball so much."

"I saw that for two years," Jeremiah said. "Last year, corner-wise and doing him over the summer, there was a little more raw, not as consistent. He was more on the impactful side offensively. … He's improved drastically coverage-wise from last year to this year."

The Ringer's Todd McShay is also very high on Hunter's receiving abilities, but he questioned whether working primarily as a wideout could limit his usage.

“I think he's a more advanced receiver and better receiver than he is a corner,” McShay said to Breer. "But I don't see a scenario where he's a full-time receiver that you're working in packages as a corner. I think it's the reverse. I think he's rare. You have to have a plan. My plan would very likely be let's develop him as a corner and put in installs every week where we utilize him at wide receiver."

The longtime draft analyst went on to praise Hunter's physical tools.

"His body control, flexibility, the ability to contort, adjust, all that stuff is rare," he said. "When he gets the ball in his hands, it's like a different animal comes out. Everything;s under control. He's so smooth."

Breer said Hunter drew comparisons to the Philadelphia Eagles' DeVonta Smith and New York Jets' Garrett Wilson as a wideout and six-time Pro Bowler Darius Slay Jr. as a cornerback.

There's a reason why Breer called Hunter "probably the most interesting prospect I’ve come across."

The Tennessee Titans badly need a new quarterback and they have the opportunity to take either Miami's Cam Ward or Colorado's Shedeur Sanders with the No. 1 overall pick. Hunter might still be too good of a talent to pass up.
