NFL Insider: Myles Garrett Trade Would Go 'Against' Commanders GM's Roster Strategy
Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters' team-building approach could decrease the likelihood that team pursues a trade for Cleveland Browns star pass-rusher Myles Garrett.
"Trading for Myles Garrett would significantly improve a limited defense while signing a free-agent wide receiver would give Daniels another playmaker," Ben Standig of The Athletic wrote on Sunday. "Given the significant salary cap space and their draft picks, itโs doable but also goes against Petersโ preferred roster-building route. The roster had holes beyond 28 free agents, but significant salary cap space and seven draft picks are available."
Garrett requested a trade from Cleveland on Feb. 3.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo later reported that the Browns have "made it clear theyโre not interested in trading" the six-time Pro Bowl defensive end.
Garrett previously expressed his belief that the Commanders are one of the teams he'd be an ideal fit for.
"I've thought about the squads that could use a guy like me," Garrett told Sports Illustrated (3:19 mark). "I think the Commanders are amongst them. I think they need a pass rusher; I think that's something they dearly missed in the playoffs and some of their big games. I feel like I could fill that role."
Washington is coming off an impressive 2024 season, finishing with a 12-5 record and making an NFC Championship Game appearance.
The Commanders were led by first-year quarterback Jayden Daniels, who threw for 3,568 yards and amassed 31 total touchdowns. He earned Offensive Rookie of the Year honors for his efforts.
Washington's offense was stellar but its defense was inconsistent, ranking No. 18 among all NFL teams by allowing 23 points per game during the regular season.
The possible addition of Garrett should immediately help, as he's recorded at least 14 sacks and 17 tackles for loss in each of the past four years.
The Commanders also have the financial flexibility to make a move work, as they currently have the third-most cap space in the league (via Over the Cap).
Peters' outlook towards building out Washington's roster appears to be a hurdle in potential negotiations, though.
