NHL Fans Sing Happy Birthday to Late Johnny Gaudreau's 1-Year-Old Son on Video
Johnny Gaudreau Jr. got quite the first birthday well-wishes on Saturday.
The sellout crowd of 18,809 at Nationwide Arena for Saturday's game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks sang "Happy Birthday" to the son of the late Johnny Gaudreau during a stoppage in the first period:
Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch noted the arena's video board showed the young Gaudreau and his mother, Meredith, as the fans sang along.
"Baby Johnny" is the youngest of Gaudreau's two kids.
Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were struck and killed by a driver when they were riding bicycles in August. Bethany Bruner of the Columbus Dispatch reported earlier this month that the driver had a pre-trial conference and faces six criminal counts, including reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter.
The Blue Jackets have honored Gaudreau throughout the season.
They shared a video celebrating his life before their home opener, raised a banner with his No. 13 jersey into the rafters, have worn a commemorative helmet decal with that jersey number throughout the season and set up a memorial to the brothers inside Nationwide Arena.
What's more, Team USA displayed his No. 13 jersey inside the locker room during the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament. That jersey was also awarded to whichever player was the player of the game following wins.
Gaudreau played 11 years in the NHL, including his final two with the Blue Jackets. He was a member of the Calgary Flames during his first nine seasons.
