Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, died in August after being struck by an alleged drunk driver while riding bikes in New Jersey the night before their sister's wedding.
Gaudreau was a member of Team USA's under-18 team in 2010 before joining the junior team in 2013. In 2014, Gaudreau represented the United States at the Ice Hockey World Championships. He then played for Team USA from 2017 to 2019, winning a bronze medal at the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2018. After a few years away from Team USA, he rejoined the squad for the 2024 IIHF World Championships.
Per MassLive's Lauren Campbell, Gaudreau's No. 13 jersey has been hanging in Team USA's locker room during the 4 Nations Face Off.
“We thought it was important that he was there,” Team USA general manager Bill Guerin said. “Johnny and Matthew were an important part of USA Hockey and a tremendous loss. They’re with us in spirit. I just think it was important that Guy was there. He’s an amazing guy. We love having him around.”
Eruzione represented the United States at the 1975 and 1976 IIHF World Championships before joining Team USA for the 1980 Winter Olympics. He became synonymous with Team USA hockey at the Winter Olympics, where he captained the United States team that defeated the Soviet Union in the "Miracle on Ice" game.
