Steelers Rumors: 'Whispers' Team Will Look at QBs Other Than Wilson, Fields in NFL FA

The Pittsburgh Steelers may not limit themselves to picking between Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as they address the quarterback position this offseason.

As ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported during Thursday's SportsCenter, "there are even some whispers around the league that maybe they'll look broader at all the quarterbacks that are available if they feel that they can help them. Not just Fields or Wilson."

That could potentially include a player like Sam Darnold, the top quarterback expected to hit the market. Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins could be other possibilities.

As for Fields and Wilson, Fowler reported that there is "some internal optimism or some sentiment for Fields as an option as the quarterback moving forward. And if both sides are open to a potential deal—we'll see how this all shakes out—Fields could have options. Because Darnold on the market is the top quarterback. Fields might just be No. 2 based on age and upside. So you take a team like the New York Jets, who could get involved with Fields. Meanwhile, Wilson has made the Steelers a priority. He loved it there. He would like to be the quarterback there. Certainly, Mike Tomlin feels a commitment or a loyalty to Wilson."

The Steelers are projected to have $50.7 million in cap space heading into the 2025 campaign, per Spotrac, so they'll have the room to add a quarterback in free agency. Among the teams with a clear need at the position (Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Las Vegas Raiders, Jets), the Steelers boast the best combination of available cap space, roster talent and organizational stability.

In other words, if they want a player like Darnold and are willing to pay, they'll probably get their guy. But both Fields and Wilson proved in 2024 that they would be very strong consolation prizes.
