Re-Drafting the Last 5 Rookie Classes 🤯
Byron finished first, followed by Tyler Reddick, Jimmie Johnson, Chase Briscoe and John Hunter Nemechek. The full leaderboard can be found here.
The Great American Race had a bit of a slow start, as rain brought out the caution flags just nine laps in. Eventually, the rain intensified and the race was red-flagged. Once cars were finally back on the track, the rain picked back up and cars had to return to pit road on Lap 21.
Eventually, the rain subsided, but things weren't much prettier as Stage 1 ended under caution with Joey Lagano leading the way. Stage 2 also saw some chaos as Chase Briscoe, Ross Chastain, John Hunter Nemechek, Kyle Busch, Riley Herbst, Martin Truex Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Helio Castroneves and a few other drivers were involved in a wreck.
It was a mostly clean Stage 3 until the final 20 laps. A crash broke out on Lap 186, taking out several drivers who were in contention for the win.
With just five laps to go, more chaos ensued. Christopher Bell took a hit in the back as he was trying to take the lead from Denny Hamlin, and it led to him taking out a handful of other drivers. Ryan Preece in the No. 60 car got the worst of it with his car flipping in the process.
Because the race had a late caution, it went into overtime, giving the drivers two laps once the race resumed.
If two wrecks in the final 16 laps weren't enough, one more crash occurred on the final lap. Hamlin led the group and was trying to separate himself, but he got turned around and went horizontal, taking out much of the pack. Byron avoided the wreckage in the third lane and rounded out the final straightaway to win the race.
After the win, fans praised Byron for coming away with the victory amid a chaotic finish.
Byron matched his best finish in the NASCAR Cup Series a year ago when he finished third in the standings, but he's looking for his first victory this time around. Picking up a win in the first race of the season certainly helps.
