Xavien Howard, Colts Agree to Contract in Free Agency, CB Last Played in NFL in 2023
Four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Xavien Howard has agreed to a contract with the Indianapolis Colts, agent David Canter told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The one-year deal is worth $5 million, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Howard last played in the NFL in 2023, though he did visit the Cincinnati Bengals last November and work out for the Dallas Cowboys in December.
Howard played his first eight NFL seasons for the Miami Dolphins, leading the league in interceptions twice. He is just one of nine players to amass double-digit picks in a single season this century, snagging 10 in 2020 alongside an NFL-high 20 pass breakups.
Howard, 32, was certainly a fantastic addition for a Miami team that selected him with a second-round pick out of Baylor in 2016.
However, his time with the team ended abruptly in February, less than two years after agreeing to a five-season, $90 million contract extension. Mike Garafolo and Peter Schrager of NFL Network reported the news.
In 2023, Howard recorded 45 tackles, one interception and 12 pass breakups in 13 games. A left foot injury ended his 2023 campaign prematurely.
Howard was ultimately a cap casualty, but now he's starting the next chapter of his NFL career with Indianapolis.
