J.D. Martinez Reportedly Joins Mets Front Office After 14-Year MLB Career

Adam WellsMar 31, 2026

J.D. Martinez is returning to the New York Mets this season, albeit in a different role than the last time he suited up for them as a player.

Per Tim Healey of The Boston Globe, Martinez is being hired by the Mets as a special advisor to the baseball operations department.

Healey noted the role will be similar to the one Carlos Beltrán has had with the Mets since joining the front office in 2023.

This marks Martinez's return to MLB after sitting out all of 2025. He last played in 2024 with the Mets, but there has been no indication he has ever formally retired.

Martinez was a late free-agent signing prior to the start of the 2024 season when he joined them on a one-year, $12 million deal.

Despite being a late addition to the Mets' roster two years ago, Martinez finished with a solid .235/.320/.406 slash line with 16 homers in 495 plate appearances.

The Mets made a second-half surge to make the playoffs and advanced all the way to the NLCS when they were expected to be in more of a rebuilding phase in 2024.

Now, at 38 years old, Martinez will assist the Mets coaches and players as they look to make a playoff push this season.

If this move does indicate the end of Martinez's playing career, he will finish with a .283/.348/.516 slash line and six All-Star appearances in 14 seasons with six different clubs.

Martinez won a World Series as a member of the 2018 Boston Red Sox.
