Russell Wilson Rumors: Giants Still Viable Landing Spot After Jameis Winston Contract

Adam WellsMar 22, 2025

The addition of Jameis Winston isn't going to stop the New York Giants from pursuing other quarterbacks options, including Russell Wilson.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler said on the Saturday morning SportsCenter that Wilson has looked at the Giants as a "viable option" for some time (starts at :52 mark), and things haven't changed in the wake of landing Winston.

Per Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz, Winston agreed to a two-year, $8 million contract with the Giants on Friday.

New York has also been connected to Aaron Rodgers in free agency, though that buzz seems to be dying down after he met with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday.

No deal came together between Rodgers and the Steelers during that meeting, but NFL Network's Tom Pelissero noted the two sides have had contract parameters in place for weeks.

The Giants have to come out of this offseason with two quarterbacks. Tommy DeVito was the only one they had under contract at the start of free agency.

Even though DeVito has had some fun moments when he's been thrust into a starting role, the Giants needed to be better overall at quarterback going into the 2025 season.

Winston provides them with a more stable backup than DeVito. He's got big-play potential that should pair nicely with a dynamic outside receiver like Malik Nabers if he gets put into action.

There's always the chance the Giants would have the opportunity to select a quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the draft, though that seems like it's becoming less of an option with each passing day.

Cam Ward is regarded as the frontrunner to be the top pick by the Tennessee Titans. Shedeur Sanders is picking up steam as the Cleveland Browns' preferred choice at No. 2.

The Giants could either decide to wait for the draft to see if they could get Sanders or potentially try to trade up, but missing out without signing another viable starting option in free agency would be disastrous for a head coach and general manager (Joe Schoen) who probably need to win a lot of games in 2025 to save their jobs.

Wilson is a flawed player at this stage of his career, but he's still capable of being a quality starting quarterback in the NFL. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns and a 63.7 completion percentage in 11 starts for the Steelers last season.

The only Giants quarterback who has thrown for at least 2,400 yards, 15 touchdowns and completed 63 percent of their passes in the past six seasons was Daniel Jones in 2022 (3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, 67.2 completion percentage).
