Too Much Pressure: Oudin Ends Her Magical Run at The US Open

Benny HsuSep 9, 2009

If you watched any of the heavily hyped quarterfinals tonight with the Cinderella of the tournament against another relative unknown Caroline Wozniack, you probably had the same look on your face as Oudin did.

It was frustrating to watch if you were rooting for Oudin, as I was.

Before the match, you couldn't turn on to ESPN without hearing her name. Celebrities such as NBA's Steve Kerr, A-Rod's current fling Kate Hudson (absent from a game at Yankee stadium?), and Alec Baldwin all showed up tonight. With all the hype, maybe it all caught up to Oudin.

Both players came in to the match having never made it this far into a major, but Oudin was certainly getting all the attention.

Media requests. Autographs everywhere she went. Photographs. Being kicked out of her hotel room. Imagine the stress she went through these last couple days? Hard to just focus on tennis, especially for a 17 year old.

Wozinack came in with no pressure. No attention. Just able to just focus on tennis. She played a night match already, so she had that experience. Oudin was a prime time novice tonight.

Wozinack is only 19, but that's two more years of experience than Oudin. It showed.

Oudin never got on track tonight, hitting unforced errors over and over again. When she hit winners, the crowd felt a rally coming. Yet it would all be gone in a blink of an eye with another unforced error.

I hope Oudin will learn from this experience these past nine days. American tennis is in need of another women's star. With her small stature and screams of "come on!", we all love an underdog and I think she fits the role perfectly for the future.
