The Fresh Prince Leaving the Milwaukee Brewers after 2009?

Bill MckillopSep 9, 2009

Is it possible that Prince Fielder could be on the move out of Milwaukee? If Milwaukee icons Laverne & Shirley left I am sure the Fresh Prince can also go. What would be the impact to the attendance? The franchise? What could they get in return for Fielder? These are all questions GM Doug Melvin will have to ask himself this offseason.

Why would Prince leave?

The main reason he would be moved is salary related. He is making $6.5 million in 2009 and will make $10.5 million in 2010. With the Brewers out of the playoff hunt for 2009 and Prince having one year left on his current two-year deal its possible he could be moved before upcoming arbitration. He is eligible for arbitration before the 2011 season and after 2011 he will be a free agent.

In arbitration, I would forecast him getting a hefty raise to about $15 million or more. The Brewers seem to be at the top of the teams payroll budget with spending about $80 million each year on team salary so any payroll relief would helpful.

Team Salary 2009 – 2005

Year   —–Total Payroll
2009  —–$ 80,182,502
2008  —–$ 80,937,499
2007  —–$ 70,986,500
2006  —–$ 57,568,333
2005  —–$ 39,934,833

Where would Prince Go?

My three locations for Prince would be the Giants, Red Sox, or Mets.

I think the Giants would be a perfect fit for Fielder’s power and they probably could come up with a package of young pitchers to satisfy the Brewers needs for return value.

The Mets could use Prince’s lineup presence but I am not sure they would have the return prospects or players to make the Brewers happy.

The Red Sox could also be a great home from Fielder and they are not scared to retool and a young star from time to time. Papelbon, Lester, and "Prospect X" for Fielder may be enough to make this happen and it would get Prince to the American League.

Personally I would not look to trade Prince until somewhere near the July 31st deadline in 2010 if I was out of the hunt. It would take a mighty package to get me to trade this star out of Milwaukee in the offseason. Not only does he put up big numbers but he sells lots of tickets. I think moving Fielder would cause the Brewers attendance to “Jump the shark” so to speak. (Sorry for all the TV references today.) Either way enjoy your time with the Prince while you have it as soon he may be gone.

Milwaukee Brewers

Year —–Average Attendance
2009 —–37,944
2008 —–37,882
2007 —–35,421
2006 —–28,835
2005 —–27,296
