Don't Expect Another Championship from Federer or Nadal

Charles LernerSep 9, 2009

Since 2005, seventeen out of the nineteen major tennis titles (Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open and US Open) have been won by either Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal. With respect to Marat Safin (2005 Australian) and Novak Djokovic (2008 Australian), Roger and Rafa have dominated the tennis world by continually being victorious. In this years US Open, both have been un-touchable and many analysts and fans are predicting yet another Federer-Nadal Final. Well they will be wrong.

The most exciting player to watch this series has been the sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro, or DelPo as Brad Gilbert enjoys to call him. The 6'6" Argentinian, who always wears colorful shirt and wristbands, has exactly what it takes to win: not only is he talented and young, but he is just enough of an underdog to take over the fans of New York in any final match.

Last years number six seed, Andy Murray, was ousted by Del Potro's next opponent, Croatia's Marin Cilic. Cilic, also at 6'6", has never reached a quarter final. Although this may be the "biggest" quarter final match in US Open history, it will not be the biggest match to watch. Del Potro has used his over-powering forehand to cruise so far, and he will not let Cilic get in his way.

After he beats Cilic, Del Potro will most likely have to face Spain's star Rafa Nadal. In what promises to be an exciting match to watch, Del Potro will find Nadals weaknesses, attack them, and overpower Nadal to advance to the final.

Just as he has done for the past five years, Roger Federer will reach the US Open finals. Arguably the most dominant player ever, Federer will once again face the number six seed; this time it will not be a straight set cruise.

Juan Martin Del Potro will win the fans over after he beats Nadal, and will have the fans on his side during the final match. He will not do it easily, but Juan Martin Del Potro will beat Roger Federer in one of the most memorable US Open matches of the decade.
