WWE Battleground 2015: Seth Rollins vs. Brock Lesnar, Most Anticipated Matches

James MoffatJun 30, 2015

WWE is doing everything it can to make WWE Battleground must-see TV, starting with the main event: Brock Lesnar vs. Seth Rollins for the WWE Heavyweight Championship.

There’s an argument to be made that this match is being wasted on a B-level event like Battleground. I disagree. It is a perfect forum to renew this feud and could result in new angles that will spill into SummerSlam just a month later.

There are two ways this match ends, and each would lead the current champion on very different paths.

First, WWE continues to lean on The Authority angle with Rollins, setting up a disqualification and Rollins retaining the title. It wouldn’t be a major surprise. Since his win at WrestleMania 31, Rollins’ booking has been lackluster at best. He’s played the weasel throughout his reign, relying too heavily on interference for his pivotal wins.

Rollins keeping the title via DQ would set up a rematch at SummerSlam when Lesnar would regain the title.

The second option is Lesnar winning clean, leading to the inevitable Rollins-Triple H match at SummerSlam. It’s been an open rumor for months, and F4WOnline.com (h/t WrestleZone.com) is reporting that said match is currently on the card for the "Biggest Party of the Summer."

Such a development would open up Lesnar’s dance card, possibly giving Sheamus, Randy Orton or someone else a chance to tangle with The Beast Incarnate.

A third, although highly unlikely, option would be having Sheamus cash in his Money in the Bank contract at Battleground. Sheamus’ recent booking has not portrayed The Celtic Warrior as a strong opponent for Lesnar or Rollins. Having him attempt a cash-in would almost certainly result in a loss, leaving Sheamus without any true direction.

John Cena vs. Kevin Owens

Heading into Money in the Bank, many wondered how Cena and Owens could top their excellent work at Elimination Chamber. All these two Superstars did was put on the Match of the Year.

WWE Creative has done its best work in quite a while with this feud, not only in its match bookings at the pay-per-views but in the builds to these matches.

This week’s episode of Raw was a perfect example of great storytelling in this war. Owens selling Cesaro as Cena’s U.S. Open Challenge opponent, then viciously attacking The Swiss Superman when he was on the brink of winning was an excellent build.

It builds Owens as the monster heel who will let nothing stand in his way of winning, and continues to push Cena as the man who accepts all challenges. This has been the story since Owens first appeared on Raw in May. It’s been consistent and strong, a combination WWE Creative hasn’t been known for in quite some time.

The biggest question is how the builds and the story will end at Battleground. Will WWE give Owens the victory and the title he deserves following a main roster debut that ranks among the best all time? Will Cena continue to be The Face That Runs the Place, walking out of Battleground with his title? Or will we see #CenaVsOwens 4 at SummerSlam thanks to a disqualification?

One thing is certain: Cena and Owens have done nothing but deliver, and there’s no reason to doubt they will do so again at Battleground.

Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt

The final match on this list has more to do with what comes next than what’s been done in the build.

Wyatt vs. Reigns isn’t going to be a technical masterpiece, nor will it even be a knockdown, drag-out street fight. It will more or less be two guys using the same couple of moves they’ve always used. The pace will be slow and the entrances will provide more entertainment than the actual spots in the match.

The outcome even feels scripted to allow Reigns the win, once again overcoming the odds with his eyes set on winning the World Heavyweight Championship. So why am I anticipating this match?

For the one-in-a-million chance that WWE has finally found its stride with The Eater of Worlds.

Since his match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31, Wyatt has been directionless. The attempt to brand him The New Face of Fear stalled because Wyatt simply wasn’t utilized. But with his physical and psychological attacks on Reigns, Wyatt’s character has been given purpose.

What if WWE uses Battleground as the launching pad for a Wyatt renaissance? A win over Reigns, the presumed next big thing in the eyes of WWE, could lead to bigger things for Wyatt.

He could use this same angle—“Anyone But You”against other Superstars deemed to be standing in his way. It might even open Wyatt up to a rematch against Ryback for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam.

Otherwise, a typical narrative that sees Reigns getting by with a clean win would leave Wyatt as hollow as one of his promos.
