WWE Battleground 2015: Best Booking Options for Dean Ambrose and Unused Stars

Aaron BowerJun 30, 2015

Although there are two substantial title matches that will likely grab a lot of the spotlight at WWE Battleground, there are some stars who, at the moment, don't have anything planned.

Seth Rollins locking horns with Brock Lesnar and John Cena vs. Kevin Owens for the third straight pay-per-view make for two hugely appealing matches, but what of the other top talent who don't have a match booked?

There's options all across the card to integrate these stars into either matches of their own or contests involving other top talent. With Dean Ambrose perhaps the most prominent example of an unused star, let's start with The Lunatic Fringe and then examine how some the other big-name Superstars can be booked at Battleground.

Dean Ambrose

With Brock Lesnar back on the scene in WWE, Dean Ambrose has regretfully had to take a step away from the main event scene ahead of Battleground.

He does so with some strong momentum and hope amongst his fans that when Lesnar vs. Rollins is done, the potential for Ambrose to move back into WWE World Heavyweight Championship contention remains.

But for now, what's next for The Lunatic Fringe? That depends on whether the WWE wants to throw him into another feud or keep him active as a side addition in another rivalry until a spot in the title picture opens up again.

Should the company go with the latter and have him float around someone else's feud (which is the way things seem to be going at the moment), then him continuing his allegiance with Roman Reigns seems like the best option.

Ambrose has history with Bray Wyatt himself, of course, and the two former Shield members sticking together on the same page is becoming somewhat of a theme.

If he's in Reigns' corner at Battleground, then that would at least not commit him to a major rivalry that may not do much for his momentum. However, if WWE opts to pit him against someone, then perhaps the next guy might be a suitable option.

Sheamus

Right now, it really doesn't seem like the WWE knows what to do with its newest Money in the Bank briefcase holder.

Sheamus' win at Money in the Bank was a major shock, and without any clear path toward a potential world title win at the moment, he needs some momentum and a major push fast.

So if Dean Ambrose is to head into another feud while Seth Rollins is busy dealing with Brock Lesnar, then  The Lunatic Fringe could be the best fit for The Celtic Warrior right now.

Ambrose is arguably the company's most over babyface at the moment, and that's the caliber of star that Sheamus needs to feud with to give him some credibility as a future world champion.

Him beating Neville on Raw this past week did little to boost his standing, and that's not meant to cause disrespect to the young Englishman.

Sheamus and Dean Ambrose have had their tussles in the past, and if the WWE is looking to give the Irishman some prestige, then he should feud with Ambrose, starting at Battleground. Failing that, a returning Randy Orton may be another suitable fit.

Randy Orton

What is one to make of Randy Orton's standing within WWE at the moment?

He is currently away from television and is not in any sort of storyline, but with him expected to return for Battleground, according to Nick Paglino of Wrestle Zone, he needs something to happen ahead of that show.

Given how he and Sheamus feuded briefly before Orton went away, they could be destined to meet at Battleground. But as mentioned previously, a feud with Dean Ambrose might be more suitable for Orton.

So where does that leave The Viper? It's tough to call. If he doesn't feud with Sheamus, the WWE may revert to type and throw him back into some form of rivalry with a member of The Authority.

Kane would be the most logical choice in that respect, but you get the feeling Orton needs a change of direction rather than going back down that route.
