George O'Leary and Larry Fedora Teleconference: Week Two Quotes

Jessica DSep 8, 2009

I caught up with George O'Leary and Larry Fedora through teleconference on Labor Day to talk football.

Coach O'Leary answered questions on UCF's win vs. Samford in Week One, as well as what he expected from Southern Miss next week in Hattiesburg.

Coach Fedora commented on his 52-0 win against Alcorn State at home in Week One, as well as Central Florida's film. Here's what they said:

Coach O'Leary on the UCF-Samford game

"The team definitely showed their resiliency. Brett Hodges was the key to the whole game. But we left 20 points on the field, which you can't do in games. I give credit to the players; they stayed in the game...but we squandered opportunities."

Coach O'Leary on the QB situation vs. Samford

"We had the intention of playing both quarterbacks anyway. Hodges just matched the game really well."

Coach O'Leary on Southern Miss

"They have a lot of productive players on offense. I'm impressed with their quarterback (Austin Davis) and what he gets done and how he operates. He can hurt you with his arm and his feet.

"They have very good receivers and a running back that is the class of the league. Their offensive line is also impressive. Of course we wish we had more grass under our feet for games like this. We just play the schedule."

Coach O'Leary on Southern Miss QB Austin Davis

"He is the start of the engine for (Southern Miss's) offense, makes good decisions, and has a good future ahead of him.

Coach O'Leary on UCF's offense

"All the mistakes we made (in the UCF-Samford game) were correctable. We're still making sure we're working our own people and making the corrections we need to make."

On Southern Miss's "no huddle" scheme

"We have some experience on defense, and they've seen no huddle before."

Coach O'Leary on his quarterbacks

"(Calabrese and Hodges) will split (playing time) until I feel very comfortable about one guy. They have been sharing snaps all pre-season.

"It's the offensive coordinator (Charlie Taaffe)'s call, but I was comfortable with the change (in the Samford game) because Rob needed to settle down a bit.

Coach Fedora on UCF and their tape

"They are really good football players and they are coached extremely well. They are going to make more improvements this week, and we understand we have our work cut out for us."

Coach Fedora on UCF's quarterback situation

"The quarterbacks are very similar in what they do. Both of them will probably play for a while 'til one of them stands out more than the other one. We're preparing for both quarterbacks."

Coach Fedora on WR Deandre Brown

"He's a little bit better than he was Friday and Saturday. He just wasn't ready. He wasn't where he needed to be. I didn't want the chance of having a setback.
